Gabriel Marini’s "Malice" is a sports illustration depicting the 2004 NBA Brawl “Malice at the Palace,” during which the Indiana Pacers and Detroit Pistons entered the stands and fought fans live on national television. Some noteworthy players involved include Ron Artest, Ben Wallace, Jermaine O’Neal and Stephen Jackson. Marini focuses on a fantastical interpretation of the scene in which Artest, the main victim and perpetrator of the violent events, attacks the man who threw the beverage that began the riot. Malice features time accurate uniforms, clothing and stadium decor based on the original broadcast of the event.
Marini uses water soluble oils in a meticulous, opaque quality to create a rich depth of color and light contrast. The attention to detail and weeks of work are present in each brushstroke, and "Malice's" chaotic cohesion speaks for itself.
This painting is currently being shown in Artscape Youngplace's "19 Themes" in association with Sheridan College in Toronto, Canada.
